Between 1976 and 1992 Trusaŭ worked at the Belarusian Restoration Design Institute as Head of the Department of Complex Scientific Research. In 1981 he defended his PhD thesis.

Between 1996 and 1998 he was dean of the Faculty of Library and Information Systems at the Belarusian University of Culture. In 1990 he co-founded the Belarusian Humanities Lyceum.

Trusaŭ is one of the creators of the Pahonia, Belarus' white-red-white flag coat of arms.

Between 1990 and 1996 he was a deputy in the 12th convocation of the Supreme Council (upper house of parliament). Between 1990 and 1995 he was Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council's committee on education, culture and historical heritage.

In 1989 Trusov co-founded the Belarusian Language Society. In April 1997 he was elected First Deputy Chairman of the society; in 1999 he was elected chairman.
