Later he worked as Anchorman for the 'Prospectus' programme. From 1996 onwards he worked as Chief Editor of 'Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta'. In the same year he was appointed Head of the Belarusian Bureau of Public Russian Television (ORT) (now called Channel 1) and worked as an ORT Correspondent in Belarus. In July 1997, while filming a report about the situation at the Belarusian-Lithuanian border, he was arrested by Belarusian law enforcement on charges of illegally crossing the border, accepting money from foreign intelligence agencies and illegal journalistic activities. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and one year's probation after spending a total of three months in prison. In 1998 Šaramiet started working as a Special Correspondent for the 'News' and 'Times' programmes at the Department of News Programmes at ORT, and in January 1999 became Chief Editor of the Russian and Foreign Correspondent Network. During this period he also worked as Anchor for the 'Time' weekly analytical programme. In 2000 he left work at these news programmes and continued work at Channel 1 as Creative Director for documentaries and special projects until 2008. From 2009 onwards he worked as the Editor of the Politics and Society sections at 'Ogonek' magazine. For some time in 2011 he worked as Anchor for the 'Verdict' programme on REN TV. Since 2012 wrote a journalist blog for the internet newspaper 'Ukrainian Pravda'. In 2012 he also created the popular science and history website 'Historical Truth'. From September 2013 to 2014 he worked as an Anchor for the 'Prav?Da!' programme on Russian Public Television. After that he started work in collaboration with 'Ukrainian Pravda' and later became its Executive Director. From September 2015 he worked as an Anchor for the Ukrainian 'Radio News'. Pavel Sheremet was killed in Kiev, on July 20, 2016 as a result of the explosion of the car of the owner of "Ukrainian Truth" Olena Prytula.
