He studied at the Department of Poetry at the Moscow Institute of Literature (1971). In 1973 he graduated from the philological faculty of Minsk Pedagogical Institute. From 1972-1975 he was a literature journalist with the newspaper "The Banner of Youth", from 1975-1978 -he was editor of the newsletter "Theatrical Minsk". From 1978 he was the senior editor for the literary and theatrical programmes on Belarusian TV, from 1987 he worked as chief editor of "Krynica" magazine and the weekly "Literature and Art". Member of the Writers' Union (since 1978). A member of the Belarusian PEN Centre (since 1989). From 1998 to 2001 - Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers. In 1999 he moved to Poland. Since 2010 he has headed the civil campaign "Tell the Truth". Participated in the 2010 presidential election as a candidate. On 8 April 2015 he announced that he would leave all oppositional organisations. In May 2015 he established the movement "For the statehood and independence of Belarus".
