In 1958-1962 he played in a number of football teams: Locomotive (Vinnytsia, Ukraine), Moldovan (Chisinau, Moldova), and Uradža, Bielaruś and the SKA in Minsk. In 1963 he graduated from the school of football coaches at the Minsk Institute of Physical Culture. From 1963 to 1964 he was a regulator at a Minsk instrument-making plant.

In 1977 he received a PhD degree in law.

From 1964 to 1984 he served as security officer, senior officer, and the chief of the Criminal Investigation Department of Internal Affairs of Minsk, and later as deputy chief of the police department of the Minsk Executive Committee, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the police of BSSR.

From 1984 to 1987 he served in Afghanistan as an adviser.

From 1987 to 1993 was Head of the Department of Internal Affairs on transport of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus.From 1993 to 1997 he was Chairman of the Social Protection Committee of servicemen, war veterans and the perpetuation of the memory of victims at the Council of Ministers of Belarus.

From January 1997 to October 2008 - Member of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and National Security (1st, 2nd and 3rd convocations).

From 19 December 2002 to 9 December 2005 - Chairman of the Belarusian Literary Fund public association. Since November 2005 he has been chairman of the Union of Writers of Belarus.
