He worked in the magazine "Communist of Belarus," the newspaper "Litaratura i Mastactva", was a correspondent of "Pravda" in Belarus, was the chief editor of the magazine "Maladosć". In 1978-1990 - the chairman of the State committee of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic on Television and Radio. Was dismissed from this position for support of the democratic forces and transfered to diplomatic work.

In 1990 he was appointed Permanent Representative of the Republic of Belarus to the United Nations, but in 1993 requested the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus to be released from this post. After his return, in 1994-1995, he was Deputy Minister of Culture and Press.

Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Belarusian SSR of 10th and 11th convocation (1980-1990), was one of the initiators of the adoption of the Law on Languages. He was chairman of the Belarusian Language Society named after F. Skaryna. In 1995-2001 he worked in the magazine "Vožyk" in Minsk.

Since 2008 he was the head of the supervisory board of the satellite TV channel Belsat.
