Began work as an electrician.
From 1976-1992 - was Master, Laboratory Head, Dead of Department, Deputy Director and then Director responsible for the Homiel Factory Radio-Technological Department.
From 1992-1998 - was Director-General of the 'Raton' Homiel Scientific Association.
From 1998-2001 - was Deputy Chairman, then First Deputy Chairman of the Homiel Region Executive Committee.
From 2001-2002 - was Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus.
From 2002-2003 - First Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, then Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus, responsible for issues relating to the development of industry, construction, transport and the energy sector.
From December 2003 to December 2010 - was Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus.
On December 28th 2010 he resigned.
On December 13th 2011 he was appointed Minister and Board Member for Industry and the Agro-Industrial Complex of the Eurasian Economic Commission.
Author of more than 40 scientific papers and monographs. A specialist in the field of vacuum-plasma processing. Currently a Professor at the International Academy of Engineers.
