Career 

Served in the Soviet and Belarusian army. In 1994 he became Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of Belarus, in 1995 the Minister of Defence. From 1997 he coordinated military cooperation between CIS countries.

In 2000-2001 he was the Deputy State Secretary of the Security Council. In 2001 headed the Ministry of Defense, and in 2009 the Security Council, which he led beginning in 2013.

In 2013-2016 he served as the Chairman of the State Border Committee. In 2016 was discharged from military service due to retirement age.
