"He worked as a technician in the trust Arhtechbud of Ministry of Industrial Building of BSSR, serviceman of electronic equipment at Integral. In 1977-1983 he worked as head of sector, and then deputy commander of the headquarters of the Republican d student construction brigades of the Komsomol. In 1983 he moved to the Party work and worked as instructor of organizational department of Partizanski district committee and Minsk city committee of the Communist Party, the party secretary of the trust Belsuviazbud, Deputy Chairman of the Soviet executive committee in Minsk, the second and then first secretary of the Soviet district of Minsk Communist Party Committee.
In 1992 he was elected Chairman of the Soviet executive committee and district council of deputies of Minsk.
Member of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus of the 13th convocation, member of the Presidency and Head of the Communist faction. Kaliakin represented the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. Since 1994 - the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus
Kaliakin did not recognize the results of the 1996 referendum to amend the Constitution initiated by President Lukashenka and did not join the National Assembly.
He participated in the 2001 presidential elections. In 2006, he headed the election headquarters of presidential candidate Aliaksandr Milinkievič. Since May 2007 - Co-Chairman of the Political Council of the united democratic forces. In 2009, the Party of Communists of Belarus was renamed the Belarusian Left Party ""Fair World"", where Kaliakin retained his leadership.
