Career 

From 1956 to 1981 he worked in the USSR State Bank system in Belarus. He taught in the Belarusian State Institute of National Economy, was Head of the Chair of Money Turnover and Credit from 1981 to 1991. In 1991 he was approved by the Supreme Council for the post of Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Belarus.

On 14 September 1995 by a decree of the President he was removed from office. From 1991 to 1995 he was Head of Belarus Affairs in the International Monetary Fund and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

He joined the United Civil Party and headed it in 1995. He remained chairman of the party until 2000, since 2000 became the honorary chairman. He was elected a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of Belarus of the 13th convocation, was the leader of the faction "Civil Action", was nominated for the post of Chairman of the Supreme Council.
