In 1983 he defended his PhD thesis, and in 1995 his habilitation thesis in physics and mathematics. He worked as a technician, engineer, teacher, lecturer and professor at Hrodna State University. From 1995 he was the university's vice-rector for scientific work, and from 1997 to 2005 its rector. In March 2005, he was elected to the House of Representatives of the National Assembly (III convocation), and in October 2008 was re-elected as a deputy in the IV convocation. From December 2010 to December 2014 he was Minister of Trade of the Republic of Belarus. Alongside working in parliament and the Ministry of Education he continued to conduct research at various Belarusian universities.
