From 1990 to 1999 he held positions in the Civil Defense and the Interior Troops of the Republic of Belarus. In 1999-2003 was Deputy Interior Minister and Commander of the Internal Troops. The next five years was the head of the Presidential Security Service. In 2007-2008 led the Committee for State Security of the Republic of Belarus. From 2008 to 2009 was the State Secretary of the Security Council. In 2009-2014 headed the Ministry of Defence.
