Since 1975 he has been a teacher at the Belarusian State University.
In 1985-1990 - Secretary of the Minsk City Committee of the Communist Party of the Byelorussian SSR.
In 1990-1994 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Byelorussian SSR and the Republic of Belarus.
In 1995-1996 - senior researcher at the Information Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus.
In 1997 he was an expert of the National Centre for Strategic Initiatives "East-West".
In 1998-2002 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus in Japan.
In 1999-2002 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Belarus to the Philippines.

Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Belarus (1990-1991). Member of the Supreme Council of the BSSR (1990). Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus (1995-1996).
