From 1974 to 1979 worked as a teacher and secretary of the Komsomol committee at the Belarusian State University. In 1979-1994 years served as a chief of the Department of Higher Coursework of the KGB.

From 1994 to 2000 he was a Deputy State Secretary of the Security Council. From 2000 to 2006 was the Chairman of the Committee for State Control. In the years 2006-2010 was an Ambassador of Belarus to China.

From 2010 to 2014 was a deputy prime minister.
