Worked in oil and construction industries in Pakistan and Egypt. Worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was a head of the Belarusian delegation at the talks on conventional and nuclear disarmament.

In 1996 he resigned in protest against the national referendum. A founder of Charter'97. Was a presidential candidate and later a political prisoner.
