Worked for over 40 years at the Institute of Physics, National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, where he held positions ranging from graduate student to the Deputy Director for Science. From 2002 to 2006 he directed the Higher Attestation Commission.

From 2006 to 2008 he was First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration. In 2008 and in 2012 became a member of the Council of the Republic and from 2010 to 2014 led the Council of the Republic.
