Career 

In 1976-1990 served in the Armed Forces, holding positions from platoon commander to regimental commander. From 1990 to 1999 he held positions in the Civil Defense and the Interior Troops of the Republic of Belarus.

In 1999-2003 was Deputy Interior Minister and Commander of the Internal Troops. The next five years was the head of the Presidential Security Service.

In 2007-2008 led the Committee for State Security of the Republic of Belarus. From 2008 to 2009 was the State Secretary of the Security Council. In 2009-2014 headed the Ministry of Defence.
