He began his literary career in the "samizdat" in the 1980s. He was one of the leaders of the Belarusian Popular Front. Worked as the editor of the critics department of the journal Nioman (1987-1990), editor in chief of the newspaper Naša Niva (1991-2000) and Svaboda (2004-2008), Radio Baltic Waves (2000-2001), author of the weekly program Vostraja Brama on the Radio Liberty since 1997.
